Description

1. H&K OICW Program
During the first years of 2000, there was a US Program called "OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon)".
It was intended to provide Infantry with an "Integrated Weapon System", consisting of 2 Blocks:
- the "KE (Kinetic Energy) Module", being a 5.56 STANAG Compatible "Assault Rifle" that could be eventually detached from the System to be operated independently;
- the "HE (High Explosive) Module", being a Magazine-Fed "Air Burst Grenade Launcher".
This Weapon System proved to be 5 Times more Effective than the Regular "Assault Rifle + Underbarrel Grenade Launcher" Combination!
After many Tests, the H&K OICW was however cancelled, due to some Issues related to the HE Module - since 25mm Air Burst Grenades are less powerful than 40mm Standard Grenades - ;
moreover, the Success of Modular Weapon Systems (which feature Accessory Rails) greatly contributed to the Definitive Abandon of the Project.
Even if, actually, an Air Burst Grenade Launcher - derived from the Program - is currently being developed to be deployed as a Support Weapon: the H&K XM25.
Also, the South Korean Version of the OICW is currently fielded: the Daewoo K11.
It is very similar to the OICW, and uses 5.56mm NATO Magazines (Assault Rifle) and 20mm ABG Magazines (Grenade Launcher).

2. H&K/Herstal OICW II Program
Let's suppose this Future Scenario: "Thirty years passed from the Cancellation of the OICW Project, during which many Modular Weapon Systems - in particular: the Colt M4A1, the Remington ACR and the Herstal SCAR - are widely used and adopted as Standard Issues Assault Rifles...
What's the next Step? Often, we need to look to the Past to see the Future!
And so are thinking 2 of the most popular Weapon Industries: the Heckler&Koch and the Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal.
With their new "OICW II"!
It can be defined as an "OMWS (Objective Modular Weapon System, or Objective MWS)", which merges both the OICW and Modular Weapon Systems into a single Package!
How?

2.1 Statistics
It is formed by 2 Weapon Categories, and divided into 4 Interchangeable Blocks (2 more than the former OICW):
1. The "Assault Modules":
- the "Light Assault Module" (a Light Assault Rifle with Integrated Accessory Rails, chambered for the Standard 5.56mm NATO Caliber, just like the HK416 and the SCAR-L);
- the "Heavy Assault Module" (a Heavy Assault Rifle with Integrated Accessory Rails, chambered for the Standard 7.62mm NATO Caliber, just like the HK417 and the SCAR-H);
2. The "Special Modules":
- the "Close Combat Module" (a Magazine-Fed Semi-Auto Shotgun, chambered for the Standard 12 Gauge);
- the "Launcher Module" (a Magazine-Fed Air Burst Grenade Launcher, chambered for the 25mm ABG Caliber).
All the Modules can be actually operated "Individually"; also, each Module can be converted to other Calibers, upon Soldier and Mission Requirements.
However, only 2 Modules can be assembled at once, and - at the moment - they CANNOT be of the same Category!

2.2 Configurations
Here are shown all the Available and Possible Combinations:
- "Light Assault Module" + "Launcher Module" ([link]);
- "Heavy Assault Module" + "Launcher Module" ([link]);
- "Light Assault Module" + "Close Combat Module" (here shown);
- "Heavy Assault Module" + "Close Combat Module" ([link]).
The 1st and the 4th Combinations are the most Recommended, since they allow the Operator to use the OICW II also while Prone - since the Magazine Bottoms are located at the same Height - .
